First cursive joins: a gentle practice routine

Move from one comfortable lowercase letter to a short joined word with a model, a replayable pencil demonstration and a paper follow-up.

Begin with a familiar movement

Open Practice, choose Cursive lowercase and select a letter your child already recognizes. Watch the pencil once. Say where the stroke begins and where it travels. Let your child trace at a comfortable speed. A wider guide offers more room while the movement is unfamiliar; the narrower guide can wait.

Join two letters before a whole name

Choose Cursive guided joins and try ll, ee, at or an. Follow the connecting stroke without inventing an extra line between the letters. Dots and crossbars are separate movements and have their own numbered starts. After one careful attempt, say which part felt easy. Use Undo for a single stroke rather than beginning again every time.

Use a name thoughtfully

The name option presents one letter at a time so the writing stays large enough for a finger. Short names also offer a joined lowercase model. Names containing characters outside the supported English alphabet need an administrator-authored path or paper model. This tool does not decide how a family name should be spelled.

Finish on paper

Write the same letter together on paper, or let the child copy a teacher’s example. School handwriting models differ, especially for f, r, s and capitals. Match the school model when it matters. The PlayABC score checks how closely an attempt follows this particular path; it does not measure intelligence, readiness or the quality of every valid handwriting style.
