Tabla rhythm play: hear, tap and take turns

A simple way to explore contrasting drum tones in the PlayABC music playground, with large pads and a short recording option.

Explore the four pads

Choose Music, then Tabla. Tap one pad and listen until the sound fades. Try a second pad and notice whether its tone feels lower, higher, shorter or brighter. The labels make it possible to choose a pad without relying on colour alone. The sounds are original synthesized approximations, not recordings of a professional tabla performance.

Leave space between turns

An adult can tap Dha, pause, and invite the child to answer. Another round can use two taps followed by silence. Keep the pattern short enough to remember without pressure. If the child chooses another rhythm, copy it back so the exchange still feels like a conversation.

Listen to your own rhythm

Record a short sequence and play it back once. Ask whether there is a pause or a repeated sound the child notices. Recording saves the tapped notes locally and never turns on the microphone. A family can delete the saved tune from Options.

Meet the real instrument

If your family has access to a musician or a suitable recording, listen together to a real tabla. Ask the musician about the paired drums and how their sounds change. A four-pad digital playground is an introduction to sound and rhythm; it is not a complete lesson in tabla technique, bols or traditional compositions.
