PlayABC

First words begin with a shared moment

A familiar cup, a toy animal and your attention can become a useful language game.

Choose three familiar things

Place three everyday objects where your child can see them. Name one, point to it and pause. A look, a point or a sound can be part of the conversation. Avoid turning every moment into a test. Repeat the same useful words during meals, play and getting ready.

Use the picture as a bridge

Open a matching PlayABC card and listen once. Then find the real object together. Talk about what it does: the cup holds water; the ball rolls. A picture becomes more meaningful when a child can connect it with something they can touch.

Finish with a conversation

Put the device away and follow your child’s interest. If they choose the ball, roll it back and forth and say “my turn” and “your turn.” Short, responsive exchanges matter more than completing a large set of cards.
